Huacachina
"The Desert Oasis at the Heart of South America"
Sandboarding, sunset dune buggy rides, and one of the world's most extraordinary natural landscapes

Huacachina: A Natural Oasis Surrounded by Giant Sand Dunes

Huacachina is one of Peru's most visually extraordinary destinations - a genuine oasis: a small natural lagoon of turquoise water surrounded entirely by towering sand dunes reaching up to 100 meters in height, nestled in the arid desert of the Ica region on Peru's southern Pacific coast. The scene appears almost surreal - palm trees, a lagoon, and small hotels and restaurants clustered around the water's edge, with nothing but golden desert as far as the eye can see in every direction.

The dunes surrounding Huacachina offer two of Peru's most exhilarating adventure experiences: sunset dune buggy rides across the giant sand formations, and sandboarding - surfing down near-vertical dune faces on wooden boards. Both experiences are best appreciated in the late afternoon, when the slanting light turns the dunes a spectacular amber and the temperature drops to a comfortable level.

Huacachina is located just 5 kilometers from the city of Ica and is most commonly visited as part of a southern Peru circuit combining Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, and Nazca. Epic Andean incorporates Huacachina into itineraries as a half-day or full-day adventure stop, perfectly complementing the wildlife focus of Paracas and the archaeological mystery of Nazca.

Sunset Dune Buggy & Sandboarding

The classic Huacachina experience is a late-afternoon dune buggy excursion: 4x4 open vehicles race across the dunes at high speed, climbing and descending the massive sand formations in a thrilling, roller-coaster-like ride. Between buggy runs, passengers descend the dunes on sandboards - a surprisingly accessible activity that does not require any prior surfing experience. The excursion culminates at a high dune crest at sunset, where the view across the oasis and the surrounding desert is one of the most spectacular in Peru.

The Oasis at Dawn

The classic Huacachina experience begins at sunrise, when the desert awakens in golden light and the emerald lagoon reflects the towering dunes. Early-morning walks across the sand reveal a tranquil side of the oasis, with soft breezes and shifting shadows that highlight its natural beauty. Visitors can climb the dunes for panoramic views or glide gently down their slopes on sandboards, enjoying the calm before the day’s adventures. The experience culminates with the oasis bathed in morning glow, offering one of the most serene and unforgettable desert landscapes in Peru.

Ica City & the Pisco Wine Route

The nearby city of Ica is the heart of Peru’s pisco tradition, where vineyards stretch across the desert valley and the grape brandy has become the nation’s emblematic spirit. Early-morning visits to local bodegas reveal the art of distillation and the legacy of Peruvian viticulture, with private tastings that highlight both pisco and regional wines. Guests walk through cellars, learn centuries-old techniques, and savor the flavors that define this cultural heritage. Epic Andean combines Huacachina with exclusive bodega experiences, offering travelers a refined encounter with Peru’s culinary and artisan identity.
