Colca Canyon
"One of the World's Deepest Canyons & Home of the Andean Condor"
Private trekking, luxury ecolodges, and condor watching at dawn - crafted by Epic Andean

Colca Canyon: A Natural Wonder of the Andes

The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons on earth - reaching over 3,400 meters at its deepest point, more than twice the depth of the Grand Canyon - a fact that astonishes virtually every visitor who stands at the rim and looks down. Carved by the Colca River over millions of years through the Andes, the canyon is flanked by ancient Inca and pre-Inca agricultural terraces, dotted with traditional Andean villages, and home to one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles: the daily thermal flight of the Andean condor.

Cruz del Cóndor - a dramatic overlook on the canyon's north rim - is where condors launch themselves from their roosts at dawn and ride the thermals rising from the canyon floor, often soaring within meters of watching visitors. With wingspans reaching 3.2 meters, the Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the world, and watching them ride the thermals in silence over the abyss is one of the most powerful wildlife experiences in South America.

At Epic Andean, our private Colca Canyon experiences combine the condor spectacle with guided canyon treks, visits to traditional Collagua and Cabana communities in their distinctive embroidered costumes, soaks in thermal hot springs on the canyon floor, and nights at the canyon's finest boutique lodges.

Condor Watching at Cruz del Cóndor

The Cruz del Cóndor overlook is the primary destination for condor watching in Peru. Between 7:00 and 10:00 AM, condors emerge from their overnight roosting sites in the canyon walls and launch into the rising thermals, spiraling upward in silence on their enormous wings. On a good morning, 10–20 condors may be visible simultaneously. Epic Andean arranges private dawn departures from Arequipa or from lodges within the canyon, timed to arrive at Cruz del Cóndor at first light.

Canyon Trekking - One to Three Days

The Colca Canyon offers some of the most dramatic and rewarding trekking in South America. The classic route descends from the rim to the canyon floor (a 1,200-meter descent), crosses to the oasis village of Llahuar with its natural hot springs, and ascends to the village of Cabanaconde on the opposite rim - a 2 to 3 day adventure. Shorter day hikes descend to the Sangalle oasis (known as the 'paradise oasis') and return the same day. Epic Andean provides private expert mountain guides, quality camping equipment, and mule support for all multi-day treks.

Traditional Communities of the Colca Valley

The villages of the Colca Valley - including Yanque, Chivay, Maca, and Cabanaconde - are home to the Collagua and Cabana peoples, who maintain distinctive traditional dress and customs. Women in these communities wear elaborately embroidered blouses and distinctive felt hats unique to each village. A private guided visit to one of these communities, including a traditional weaving demonstration and a visit to the local colonial church, adds an essential human dimension to the canyon experience.
